GreasePaint is Headed to SouthSide

2014 Official Selection SouthSide Film Festival

2014 Official Selection SouthSide Film Festival

GreasePaint has been officially selected to be a part of the 11th Annual SouthSide Film Festival.  Their mission and objective is to promote the art of the independent filmmaker. The festival is run by the SouthSide Film Institute (SSFI).  Based in the strong arts and business community of South Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, this grass-roots organization is run by volunteers and will be presenting this year’s annual SouthSide Film Festival from June 10th – June 14th, 2014.

We are extremely honored to be selected for this festival knowing that the jury consists of such a wide variety of individuals.  Consisting of film buffs who only give it a “thumbs up” or “thumbs down”, to a few people who have worked on films, the jury has people of varying backgrounds.  This is very important to us since we are trying to convey this misunderstood art of clowning to a general audience.  The examples they give (a deli owner, a librarian, a retired minister, etc.) are a true reflection of the film-going community rather than the circus and clown fans who would already be interested in our film.

After we were notified of our invitation from Glenn Koehler, the festival’s director, They offered FREE HOUSING to our director if he attends the festival.  They definitely know how to make filmmakers feel welcome.  This is actually our first non-competitive festival we will be attending.  They only have the ability to select a very low percentage of films submitted, so our “Official Selection” is an award in itself.  Furthermore, the jury selects films of all lengths, budget, years of production and genres purely based on storytelling.  Being a local production, budget and star power, amongst many other superficial factors have zero weight in their selection process.

GreasePaint will be screening at Broughal Middle School located at 114 West Morton Street, Bethlehem, PA 18015.  The first screening is Wednesday, June 11th, 2014 at 5:20 pm and the second screening is Saturday, June 14th, 2014 at 1:20 pm.

GreasePaint had its Florida premiere as an official selection at the 16th Annual Sarasota Film Festival.  As soon as we arrived at the festival’s headquarters, we were treated like rockstars!  From the very beginning, our crew felt very comfortable and welcome by every member of the SFF staff.  They walked us through every step of the preparation process and answered every question we had in a very prompt manner.  What really impressed us is their incredible volunteers.  SFF has a great audience of cinephiles and every volunteer had fantastic attitudes and insured our screenings ran smoothly.  We can’t thank SFF enough for being so hospitable to us and allowing us to screen to their audience amongst so many amazing films from around the world.  SFF listed GreasePaint as a “Must See Movie“.

Our first screening day was jam-packed with press interviews.  First up was the SFF Spotlight Series interview with the director of GreasePaint, Daniel Espeut.  The interview was conducted by SFF in-house journalist and New York Times bestselling author, Scott Ciencin.

Afterwards, Mr. Espeut had the opportunity to speak with senior editor for the SRQ Media Group, Jacob Ogles.  His interview can be found on the SRQ Backlot website and it aired on The Nilon Report on WSRQ 1220 AM & 106.9 FM Sarasota Talk Radio.  He was then interviewed by SRQ contributor, Bridget O’Brien, for an SRQ Backlot featured article about GreasePaint.

Later on that day, our first screening took place in theater 10, their largest theater.  Our first audience lined up early to get into the screening.  Once they were sent in to be seated, the queue filled up again with more people!  Soon, the theater was packed with SFF patrons ready to experience the in-depth look into the art of American circus clowning known as GreasePaint.

GreasePaint is having its Sarasota Homecoming!

GreasePaint is a 2014 Official Selection for the 16th Annual Sarasota Film Festival.

GreasePaint is a 2014 Official Selection for the 16th Annual Sarasota Film Festival.

GreasePaint has been officially selected to screen at the 16th Annual Sarasota Film Festival!  This achievement is huge for GreasePaint and the its production team, considering it’s a true homecoming into one of the best known circus cities in the world!  During filming, a great deal of time was spent in Sarasota capturing not only some local circus legends, but also the rich Sarasota circus history.

The film follows first generation circus performers Joey and Jamie Thurmond, who abandon full time careers and invest their entire life savings to embark on the unknown journey that is the noble art of circus.  GreasePaint is a glimpse behind the curtain as the family endure hardships in their pursuit to make audiences laugh while managing to live and work together in ever-changing circumstances.

GreasePaint features International Clown Hall of Fame inductee Jackie LeClaire and Karen Bell who were interviewed at the Ringling Circus Museum.  Curator Deborah W. Walk was interviewed not only at the circus museum, but also on board the restored Wisconsin Pullman Rail Car that belonged to John Ringling!  Chuck Sidlow, the youngest “Boss Clown” ever of the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus, was also interviewed in Sarasota.  International Clown Hall of Fame inductee, former Ringling Circus advance clown and developer of the Ronald McDonald character for the McDonald’s Corporation, Michael “COCO” Polakovs widow, Mrs. Hazel Polakovs was interviewed in the area as well.  The film is highlighted with an interview with Circus Ring of Fame member Dolly Jacobs at Circus Sarasota.  Dolly is a daughter of Master Clown and International Clown Hall of Fame inductee Lou Jacobs.  She is not only a founder of Circus Sarasota, but also a driving force behind Sailor’s Circus.  Dolly has been instrumental in the thriving circus history of Sarasota.

We are so honored that GreasePaint, which has been called the “Greatest Collection of Circus Who’s Who”  will be having its Florida premiere with two screenings at the 16th Annual Sarasota Film Festival.  The premiere will take place at the Regal Hollywood Stadium 20 located at 1993 Main Street, Sarasota, FL 34236.  The first screening is Tuesday, April 8th, 2014 at 5:30 pm in Theater 10 and the second screening is Wednesday, April 9th, 2014 at 6:30 pm in Theater 8.

Daniel Espeut of EsPeuté Productions, the director of GreasePaint, will be in attendance for the premiere and the Q&A sessions that follow each screening.  This is an historic event both for the art of circus and the city of Sarasota!  Please come out and support the Sarasota Film Festival and help GreasePaint win the Audience Choice Award!

More than an OK Premiere for GreasePaint

2014 Official Selection Bare Bones International Film & Music Festival

2014 Official Selection Bare Bones International Film & Music Festival

GreasePaint has been officially selected to have it’s Oklahoma premiere at the 15th Annual Bare Bones International Film & Music Festival in Muskogee, OK!  We are so happy to come to the home state of the Kelly Miller Circus, who helped us make this film possible.  Right from the start of our film festival research, this one stood out to us.  They were looking for character-driven projects with high production values and we are so glad they feel that our film represents their criteria.  This festival was named one of the “20 Best Festivals for New and Emerging Filmmakers” and has long been attributed as the “World’s Friendliest Film Festival”.  They were also included as one the top 20 documentary festivals by PBS.  We are so honored to be invited to Bare Bones and we look forward to helping them make an impact this year.

GreasePaint will be screened on Saturday, April 12th, 2014 at 4:00pm at the Three Rivers Museum located at 220 Elgin, Muskogee, Oklahoma 74401.  Daniel Espeut of EsPeuté Productions, the director of GreasePaint, will be in attendance for the premiere and the Q&A session that follows the screening.
