GreasePaint is Headed to SouthSide

2014 Official Selection SouthSide Film Festival

2014 Official Selection SouthSide Film Festival

GreasePaint has been officially selected to be a part of the 11th Annual SouthSide Film Festival.  Their mission and objective is to promote the art of the independent filmmaker. The festival is run by the SouthSide Film Institute (SSFI).  Based in the strong arts and business community of South Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, this grass-roots organization is run by volunteers and will be presenting this year’s annual SouthSide Film Festival from June 10th – June 14th, 2014.

We are extremely honored to be selected for this festival knowing that the jury consists of such a wide variety of individuals.  Consisting of film buffs who only give it a “thumbs up” or “thumbs down”, to a few people who have worked on films, the jury has people of varying backgrounds.  This is very important to us since we are trying to convey this misunderstood art of clowning to a general audience.  The examples they give (a deli owner, a librarian, a retired minister, etc.) are a true reflection of the film-going community rather than the circus and clown fans who would already be interested in our film.

After we were notified of our invitation from Glenn Koehler, the festival’s director, They offered FREE HOUSING to our director if he attends the festival.  They definitely know how to make filmmakers feel welcome.  This is actually our first non-competitive festival we will be attending.  They only have the ability to select a very low percentage of films submitted, so our “Official Selection” is an award in itself.  Furthermore, the jury selects films of all lengths, budget, years of production and genres purely based on storytelling.  Being a local production, budget and star power, amongst many other superficial factors have zero weight in their selection process.

GreasePaint will be screening at Broughal Middle School located at 114 West Morton Street, Bethlehem, PA 18015.  The first screening is Wednesday, June 11th, 2014 at 5:20 pm and the second screening is Saturday, June 14th, 2014 at 1:20 pm.

GreasePaint had its Florida premiere as an official selection at the 16th Annual Sarasota Film Festival.  As soon as we arrived at the festival’s headquarters, we were treated like rockstars!  From the very beginning, our crew felt very comfortable and welcome by every member of the SFF staff.  They walked us through every step of the preparation process and answered every question we had in a very prompt manner.  What really impressed us is their incredible volunteers.  SFF has a great audience of cinephiles and every volunteer had fantastic attitudes and insured our screenings ran smoothly.  We can’t thank SFF enough for being so hospitable to us and allowing us to screen to their audience amongst so many amazing films from around the world.  SFF listed GreasePaint as a “Must See Movie“.

Our first screening day was jam-packed with press interviews.  First up was the SFF Spotlight Series interview with the director of GreasePaint, Daniel Espeut.  The interview was conducted by SFF in-house journalist and New York Times bestselling author, Scott Ciencin.

Afterwards, Mr. Espeut had the opportunity to speak with senior editor for the SRQ Media Group, Jacob Ogles.  His interview can be found on the SRQ Backlot website and it aired on The Nilon Report on WSRQ 1220 AM & 106.9 FM Sarasota Talk Radio.  He was then interviewed by SRQ contributor, Bridget O’Brien, for an SRQ Backlot featured article about GreasePaint.

Later on that day, our first screening took place in theater 10, their largest theater.  Our first audience lined up early to get into the screening.  Once they were sent in to be seated, the queue filled up again with more people!  Soon, the theater was packed with SFF patrons ready to experience the in-depth look into the art of American circus clowning known as GreasePaint.

Daniel Espeut Visits The Circus Ring of Fame

With the 16th Annual Sarasota Film Festival underway, Daniel Espeut, director of GreasePaint, brought his wife Laura to a very special place in Sarasota circus history, the Circus Ring of Fame located at St. Armands Circle.  The Ring of Fame was founded in 1987 as a way to pay homage to the men, women and families who have made major contributions to the circus industry and culture of the circus.  Annually, the public nominates a group of honorees who are voted on by former inductees.  Each new inductee is then recognized with a bronze wagon wheel plaque, which can be found lining parts of the sidewalk of the park.

GreasePaint features Circus Ring of Fame members Dolly Jacobs (1998) and Jackie LeClaire (2002).  Dolly is not only an accomplished circus aerialist and a co-founder of Circus Sarasota, she is a daughter of International Clown Hall of Fame inductee Lou Jacobs.  Lou was also inducted into the Circus Ring of Fame in 1988 and has a plaque right next to his daughter.  International Clown Hall of Fame inductee Jackie LeClaire has started his circus career at the age of one with the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus.  His career is laden with accomplishments as a circus performer including doubling on the trapeze for Cornell Wilde in the film The Greatest Show on Earth and being one of first clowns to perform with an American circus  in the Soviet Union in 1963.  “The Children’s Clown” is a title that was given to Jackie by the Ringling Brothers.

Much like the Circus Ring Fame being considered to honor the greatest performers of the circus world, GreasePaint has been called the “Greatest Collection of Circus Who’s Who”.  As an official selection of the 16th Annual Sarasota Film Festival, GreasePaint will have its Florida premiere with two screenings at the Regal Hollywood Stadium 20 located at 1993 Main Street, Sarasota, FL 34236.  The first screening is Tuesday, April 8th at 5:30 pm in Theater 10 and the second screening is Wednesday, April 9th at 6:30 pm in Theater 8.
